Why I Sponsor

Sponsorship is a huge part of our mission at GO, and we believe it is vital to the growth and education of children in need. Sarah Canfield and her husband Josh have been sponsoring 3 kids at the John Huffman school in Senegal, Africa for almost three years now. This family also has three kids of their own, each near the same age as the kid they sponsor. Below Sarah talks about how important child sponsorship has been in her life and in the lives of her children.

1) What led you to sponsorship?

“We had been working with GO for a long time through what has been going on in Senegal. We had given a grant before to do some funding for that school because we really think that education is important and that is what was on our heart. When we had kids, sponsoring kids made sense because we get a one on one relationship. I hope through the years we build a relationship and for our kids to build a relationship. I want my kids to have a perspective about the whole world, not just our world right here. “

2) What have you enjoyed through sponsorship and learned about the kids you sponsor?

“It is very interesting to read, you get not only letters from them but report cards. If you want to know the influence on them, how they are doing in school, the subjects they like and don’t like. In a situation where kids are going to school and being educated. It is great to see kids forming their own and finding out what they like more than others, that part has been really fun to see, the letters.”

3) What would you say to someone who is thinking of making that commitment to sponsor a child?

“I would say that it is a great thing to do. Especially if God has put it on your heart. For some people, they want to keep their contribution local. But it is really fun for your kids to see what is going on all over the world. It is a great thing if you have kids and want to show them a deeper and wider perspective.”
