EL CASTILLO

Year opened: 2013

Average Attendance: 25

El Castillo neighborhood is on the very outskirts of Mazatlán, located fairly close to the airport. In this neighborhood, you are likely to see homes made of found materials right alongside beautiful, much more expensive homes. This is because there is a lot of drug activity in the area, and many people who work for the cartel in trafficking, or are related to narcos (higher up officers in the cartel). While some of the children who attend the feeding center have nice homes, their family structure and culture is very rough. It is not uncommon for someone who was poor one day to suddenly have wealth the next day (a clear signal that they have started working for the cartel). This sudden wealth creates a lot of instability in an already unstable environment.

MEET THE LEADERS

Roberto and Azucena run El Castillo with their daughters Danna (13) and Victoria (1). They moved to the neighborhood to run the feeding center in 2017. Roberto is a house painter and loved to fish. Azucena works as a store clerk in a seasonal store and is a housecleaner year-round. They came to faith in the Lord through an effective evangelism campaign near Amistad Familiar church, which is how they came to the church. They love attending church with grandmother Dona Carmen. They are passionate about reaching children in the El Castillo neighborhood, and felt called to work there, even though they must both commute across the city every day for work. Since they have moved to El Castillo, the feeding center has grown and thrived under their leadership.
