ETTU ALLAH SCHOOL

CITY: Benoba (Keur Balla), Senegal

TOTAL ENROLLMENT: 354

NUMBER OF CLASSES: 8

GRADES OFFERED: Preschool - 8th Grade

Located near the Lac Rose, the famous “Pink Lake” of Senegal, Ettu Allah is in the village of Benoba (Keur Balla). Despite being fairly close to Dakar, the village is in a remote area, much of which is only accessible to horse carts as the sandy terrain will not support vehicles. Most of the families work in agriculture and livestock, which is quite difficult, poverty is rampant in this area, and parents cannot afford a good education for their children. The school was started by a Senegalese Christian woman named Jules Bertine, who began by simply opening her home up for kids’ clubs, where she began teaching children literacy. There was no school in the community before Ettu Allah, and children had to travel several kilometers to the nearest school. The school is loved and respected in its community for its rigor, professionalism, and strong results. The students are disciplined in their studies, the school teaches the Scriptures and the love of God to students in a population that is 98% non-believers. Every year, the registration requests exceed the capacity of the school.  The name “Ettu Allah” is from the Pular dialect and means “Glorify (or give thanks to) God.”
